Report on Run #49 – Meijawu – Hares Acronymph and Phone Box

Meijawu and the Four Seas restaurant last saw the hash in December for the first HZH3 snow hash and the first and second snow ball fights for the season. The first ever Meijawu run was set by Acronymph and the now distant Cigar; a controversial run because of the ancient Egyptian symbols used by the hares to mark the trail. Without the Rosetta stone the pack was buggered, forced to return by the tea field route by which they had advanced. Phone Box was obviously concerned about a repeat episode and managed a disappearance when the pack was out. So the pack of Titman, Mencheng, Hary, Skidmarks, Hayley, Joe, Ray, Aiks, Ti and this scribe had no reason to be confident about the outcome. Absent from the pack was GM Doggie Style with the excuse of an untrained Great Wall marathon on the Saturday keeping him with leg up; not good enough really, and Ray fronted too late to start. Well new runners to Meijawu quickly get the idea that the trail can really only ever go up, maybe along for a bit, but finally up, and the hares did not disappoint. A long slow climb to the mini village off the Meiling Rd, a tricky path around the end house brought the pack to the steps and then more steps and then steeper steps, then some narrow steps followed by some wide steps and then some sloping steps to finally some more normal steps which led to a lookout from where the swirling mist was seen to best advantage. This regroup broke up immediately the back markers arrived, much to the chagrin of some to be sure. Anyway, from here there were some more steps, but surprisingly not so many and the trail hit the obvious ridge above the village to the lookout designed by the PLA engineering corps. And then there was rain, and a CB back to the Olympic symbols on the ridge path for a descent to the village. Being an Olympic year the pack could figure this out, and found a flour trail down through the tea. The rain thickened and Titman managed to turn an ankle, being escorted back to the tea house by Ti, without question the last drip home, the point being that the rain was now falling thick and fast. The normal spot for a beer and circle being less convenient in the rain, the pack opted for the easy way out, straight to the dining table and 1.9% formaldehyde free beer; shame really, some formaldehyde may have given it some punch. Acronymph’s ordering hit the spot again for a per person price of 26 or 24, whatever, the change process being the challenge. Then the Y4 back to Maya and a beer with the crippled Doggie for a nightcap. So that was Run 49, next week’s run by the way will be #51, mismanagement not yet disorganized enough for the 50th, and in any case who said numbers have to be consecutive?

Sunday 25th May – 1700 – Run # 51 The Non-consecutive Run” – Corner Beishan Lu and the SuDi – For those unfamiliar with the location, it’s the junction of the road that runs along the north west side of the lake and the Su Di, the long causway that crosses the lake in a northerly direction. The run doesn’t start at the finish.

Tuesday 27th May – 19.30 – The Even If It Rains Running group sets off from Maya Bar at 7.30pm every Tuesday night, (stragglers notwithstanding), for lakeside training runs of from 5 to 14km.

Sunday 1st June – 17.00 – Hare and venue required – Please email your bid and details as soon as possible, and think ahead now for the following week. Experienced hashers can take a virgin along for the experience, (it’s a two way street).

June 20, 21 and 22nd – China Nash Hash 2008 – Tianjin Every country in the world features a Nash Hash in their calendar of important athletic events. It’s basically a weekend of……..well, hashing. Sunday 4th May – 1700 – The 5@11 Run – Hare is Hentai (Cartoon Porn) and Skidmarks – The venue is Cartoon Porn’s pub bar near the corner of North Baochu Rd and Wenyi Rd. North Baochu Rd forms a major T intersection with Wenyi Rd, with a small street that continues in the same direction as Baochu Rd. The 11 Bar is 75 metres up this small one way street on the right. Or just hang around on the corner looking lost until someone claims you. If in trouble ring Cartoon Porn on 13656815020.

Tuesday 6th May – 19.30 – The Even If It Rains Running group sets off from Maya Bar at 7.30pm every Tuesday night, (stragglers notwithstanding), for lakeside training runs of from 5 to 14km. A large crowd last week courtesy of Jackie’s article saw Doggie Style celebrate his 30th birthday with 2 circuits of the Yanggongdi Sudi 10.0km course. The maths left everyone nonplussed, but Michael was impressed enough to go with him for the first circuit and then saddle up for a 14km second circuit via Nanshan Rd and the Sudi. The post-run refreshments ended up with a life of their own, much to collective regret the following morning.

 

The idea is that new runners should feel welcome to the group, not feel like intruders; older runners can assist with introductions and ice breaking.

Run #46 The Where in Wushan Square Run – Yeti

Run # 46 – The Where in Wushan Square Run – Hare Yeti – Turnout 17 Questions raised by some of the more pedantic hashers, usually, no, always female, related to the actual start of the run in Wushan Square. The old formula often works, just stand around uselessly in some central location and the hashing world will finally come to you. It didn’t happen to scribe who had to locate the trail at the back of the square and follow it backwards to the start which was, surprisingly found at the entrance arch, yes!! As 5.00 pm crept by, the late comers crept in, including Jackie on her bike and Doggie Style on his new Giant. There’s some kind of thing going on here whereby the Giant owners make demands upon the security of the parking location of the bike that takes most of the gloss off the pleasure of cycling. Scribes advice is this; given that if your Giant is stolen, then you’ll be able to buy it back the following week at the market for half what you paid for it. So, this is a form of Chinese National cycle insurance, no premium and a 50% excess. Looks like a good deal, so relax. Anyway Doggie made it back from the Shanghai 1000th run and still was able to cycle to the start of the HZ run, cycle back, and then set himself to do 20km on Tueday night; what’s he on? After Acronymph, Skidmarks, Hary, Hayley, David, Sevenup, Cartoon Porn, Titman, Jackie, Men Ching, Pushup and a couple of new French runners arrived, an on on was called and the path wend it’s way up, of course, around the stone paths till Cartoon Porn found the trail down some stone steps, from where he set up a continuous barrage of on ons. The pack did a voluntary regroup at the top of the steps for the back markers to catch up much to Cartoon Porns dismay, and then descended to a now delighted Cartoon Porn who in fact was standing on a check back (CB). So Yeti worked this one out very well indeed. Then it was on on around limestone features, up down, left and right and on on again to another regroup in the Maoist era lookout featuring imaginative use of concrete that could only have been designed and built by army engineers just back from the front. New runner Men Ching with Acronymph were last to the top, whereupon the pack went straight back down and followed a trail through some less picturesque parts of the park area, some construction workers accommodation (always makes you feel better about your own digs), some excavations, some poor old buggers vegetable garden with the gate flattened and finally down into a village area. Along the way a couple of Cartoon Porns friends caught up with the pack, which is a testament to the well set trail, and also to some additional marks put down by Doggie for latecomers. A CB in the village area saw the trail wend back up the hill whereupon it got back to Wushan square via Hefang Street. Trying to follow a trail along the busiest street in Hangzhou on a beautiful Sunday afternoon was a bit tricky, so the trail was abandoned and the pack went straight back to the start.  The French contingent and Hentai’s friends shot off immediately to avoid a down down, but Men Ching and David (Aussie) were not pre-appraised of the new-shoe rule and so very reluctantly took their down downs, the former choosing to decant her shoe into her cup; what was the benefit of that again? There was a smokers down down, and a last in down down, several wrong name infractions, and a naming, Aaron being christened Titman. Yeti’s run failed to receive a single vote in favour when a ballot was called as to the quality of the run, but this reluctance to vote may have been more to do with the danger of the circle being mis-identified as an unauthorised political gathering, because the run was good, just about right for a mixed and relaxed crowd. The restaurant in Hefang Street is always a good deal with good atmosphere, so it was a contented crowd who went their various ways after.

Run #38 – All Roads Lead to Rome

Run #38 March 2nd –

Roman Square – Nanshan Rd – Hares Skidmarks and SevenUp There’s no other question of concern as much as whether Hangzhou hash will survive given the punishment inflicted on it’s membership by nocturnal activities other than running. Your scribe only stepped forth into the fresh air at 15.00 hours on Sunday after a period of introspection brought on by the end results of a default Friday night and then Doggie Style’s teppanyaki extravaganza on Saturday followed by a return to the Shamrock. This was all a little hard to explain to the LA based Chinese speaking ABC who accosted me for directions in Pinghai Rd and with whom I ended up breakfasting before the run. At about 15.45 I received a call from who I thought was Miki asking for directions to Roman Square. This inquiry was flick-passed to the hares who then rang a perplexed Miki who was not the inquirer. So started a confused discussion with Nicky from the Qingdao Hash who must have really wondered how low mismanagement could go. Well, Roman Square turns out to be a concrete re-creation of the forum, although it’s doubtful any senator of the day would feel at home there. Nicky, in the company of Renard, Lerry and Coco joined the returned Pelagic and Bottomfeeder, Karolina, Aaron, Phone Box, Battery Operated and scribe Pushup. On on; the trail initially lulled the pack into a gentle trot as it wound around the various lakeside garden paths. The arrows were ingeniously placed so to be hard to find, but the advantages of a larger pack and some energetic front runners meant that the pack remained on trail up to that stunning 3 way check at the gates to the Wansongling Academy. Well hares, it was effective, because by the time the correct trail had been located by Bottom Feeder in a completely different direction to any of the arrows there was plenty of time for the back markers to re-join. Then it was the steps, and then more steps and then more  steps to the top of Fenghuang Hill, then some 1000 year old Chinese verse, then more steps, and then more steps, after which there was more steps. There were steep steps, then not so steep steps, then really flat steps followed by 10 metre steps, soon to be followed by rather steep steps. Along the way, there a couple of Kodak spots (note that the power of Kodak’s brand does not translate into meaningful camera sales) where the pack happily regrouped. Another regroup was found at the mini temple at the saddle after the big root. Down still more steps was a prayer halt, where some of the pack prayed for a directional change, because as Pelagic pointed out, home was 180 degrees the other way. But, it all turned out OK, because those clever hares ran the trail back under the hill through a shortish tunnel, and about a 3km run in, with the pack arriving across the space of about 5 minutes. RA Bottom Feeder was back in his element with an inspiring message to sinners all, and there plenty to choose from. Hash infractions included using incorrect names, surreptitious assignations etc etc. Skidmarks suggested the classy looking restaurant across the road amid consternation as to the posh and expensive look of the place. The pack certainly looked a bit out of place in that grossly (there you go BO, appropriate use of the word) over decorated room (for the hash that is). Doggie Style and Acronymph mixed up their priorities once again and ended up at the Maya rather than joining the running department, but otherwise there was a full turn out and the bill of RMB25 was not too bad, although it was a beer free meal. The post On on was a fairly dry affair with only Aaron and Bottom Feeder making it to the Maya to join the recalcitrant there, others, without the reserves of health required, wilted and wimped. Well, the trail was well thought out, and well executed in some great country close to town, what more would one ask?

Run #33 – Sunday 13th January The Contradiction Run – Hare Battery Operated (assisted by PushupBa) – Meijawu re-visited – take the Y4 bus to Meijawu, it runs along Shuguang Rd past the Maya. Meet at the Maya at 2.30, or proceed to Meijawu directly – The venue is the Acro/Cigar restaurant – To get there walk back 200 metres from the bus stop to an elevated footpath and up stairs to the restaurant. The hares may not be back in time for the start, but the restaurant will look after your gear. And by the way, the contradiction is a battery operated virgin.
