Once again the Hangzhou Hash returned to one of our favourite haunts, namely, Maya Bar.

The Hares, Heavy Junk and HEIDE (with some pre-Hash help from Private Parts) had scouted out what they promised would be a fantastic Hash trail featuring forested hills, stunning city and West Lake views, secret (and not so secret) caves and temples, island hopping, throngs of tourists and sightseers, Broken Bridges (or at least one) and general Hash fun. We got all of that, plus EVEN MORE (as they stuffed up  the homeward route and added an extra kilometre or two…).

The runners were so eager to begin that HEIDE sent the pack off while a couple of people were making a quick toilet pitstop… Thanks to the well laid trail, they soon caught up though.

Afterwards, at the Circle, Just “Brooke” was given her new Hash Name of Two Small Peaks. Which I believe has something to do with the size of her… hills near her hometown in the USA…

Following the Circle for the post-Hash Bash we enjoyed some more beers at Maya Bar and ate some tasty street food bought from the stalls behind Maya Bar.

Thanks to all who attended. It was great to see more Hash virgins. They included some people just visiting Hangzhou for a couple of days.

1. HZH3 Hash #140 – The Hashers are eager to start!!! So eager, that a couple of people even got left behind at the starting line.

Hi there Hangzhou Hashers and Friends,

Well, last weekend (Sat, 19 April) we had another great time on Hangzhou Hash #137 out in the forests and tea fields around the MaoJiaBu area west of West Lake.

It was a very cloudy day, so before I started setting and marking the Hash trail I was already really worried that rain would wash away all the Hash marks along the route. Luckily, there was only a little bit of very patchy light rain during the time I way setting the trail. It was also my first time to try to set a trail as a solo hare, since Roomboy was out of town and H.E.I.D.E. had only just gotten back to Hangzhou after some time away. Note to self… ALWAYS get someone along to help carry the flour… 😉 Hence, I was a bit behind schedule setting the trail, so thanks to the Pack for waiting until 3.15pm to start so I could finish the last part of the trail and get back to the ShiWeiXian Restaurant (食为鲜酒家) start/finish venue.

Once again, it was great to see a mix of now familiar faces along with a few new Hashers (Hash Virgins) who all made the effort to come out to the MaoJiaBu area in spite of the threat of some rain.

The first amusement of the #137 Hash happened before we started when our HZH3 GM, H.E.I.D.E., gave a couple of Down Downs to the fastest Hashers from the #136 Hash, just to make sure they didn’t have too much of an advantage on this Hash.   🙂

Just as we were setting off, some light rain began and it started to look like the Hash trail markings might be washed away right from the beginning. In fact, EVERYONE missed the FIRST Check… I forgot to give everyone a Down Down in the Circle though… (Next time that happens I’ll be sure to remember!) Fortunately, even in the open areas where more rain was falling, most of the marks were still able to be seen reasonably well. I hoped the later trail marking would last for the next 90+ minutes too!!!

I designed this Hash so that the walkers separated from the runners very near the start and I also gave the walkers a couple of Checks, just to keep them on their toes! The runners headed up the road and needed just a little bit of help when they gave up on one path too soon and started heading too far along another path (that might have gotten the Hare (me) in trouble since it would have joined on to a later part of the trail…). After that, most of the Checks (for the runners at least) in the MaoJiaBu Forest went pretty smoothly as the Pack started to gain experience and work out how to work out the correct Hash trails faster.

Right when we got out of the forest we stopped for a Beer Check and to let everyone catch up and have a quick rest. See a great photo of this stop at the photo link below. We didn’t stay long as it seemed that the manager of the small restaurant had misunderstood what we planned to do (I had talked to her the day before and also in the morning, so I don’t know why she seemed to think we were going to order a 10 course meal… PS. Next time I’ll carry some paper cups too…).

After that we headed over to the huge tea field (See the photos to see the really beautiful scenery!!!) and zigged and zagged through there before finishing the Hash with another smaller section of forest.

We then enjoyed a great Circle with our GM H.E.I.D.E. and his sister’s boyfriend both trying to drink a beer with a straight arm… Very funny to watch!!! (Look at the photo link below!) You’d better practice (and take an extra shirt) though, because YOU might be next.  😉 We then had our biggest ever HZH3 Bash with almost all the Hashers staying and enjoying a great Hangzhou local cuisine dinner!

It was great to see one of the veteran Hangzhou Hashers from 3 years ago, Sheep Shagger, make his 2nd appearance at another one of our new era Hangzhou Hashes. Great stuff! We hope more of our veterans will join us on future Hashes too.

Thanks to Just “Bethany” for volunteering herself and Just “Mike” to hare the next Hash #138 on Sat, 3 May. It looks like it will start and finish at the Eudora Station Bar/Restaurant (亿多瑞站) on the middle east side of West Lake.

Hey there Hashers!

Wow! Once again it looks like I missed out on a lot of fun by being out of town for HZH3 Hash #136 which started and finished at Vineyard Cafe.

Over 30 people joined Hangzhou Hash #136! I hear that there were about 25 Hash Virgins too! That’s a lot of introductions!!!  I hope you all enjoyed coming on your first Hangzhou Hash. We hope it’s not the last time you come!  😉

Looking at the photos (See the Gallery on the HZH3 website), there’s no doubt that people were having a great time on the Hash trails and at the Circle. Congratulations to all those first timers especially! Do I see that veteran Hangzhou Hasher, Phone Box, made another trip from Shanghai to join this Hash too? Great stuff!  🙂

Congratulations also to the Hares! First timer Just “Mike” and his partner Hare in crime, H.E.I.D.E.. By all reports it was a great Hash trail with something for everyone. However, the Hares were guilty of setting a check point on a tomb! Major faux pas!! Especially on Tomb Sweeping Day!!! Fortunately this was rectified by the awarding of Downs Downs to both Hares.  🙂

Here are some words from the Hares, our HZH3 GM, H.E.I.D.E., and Just “Mike” rehashing about the HZH3 Hash #136:

Just “Mike”: The hares assigned for Run 136 were H.E.I.D.E. and Just “Mike.” Both of them spent weeks seeking out the perfect trails, and sacrificed much blood and tears to make it possible. They actually started setting the course on Friday night at Amigos and G+, and didn’t realize they weren’t actually marking a trail until 4:30 in the morning. Luckily, they realized their errors in time, and decided to regroup and try again. Early Saturday morning, they reconvened at Vineyard, penniless and armed only with flour, chalk, and a rubber chicken. The course was set in about 2 and a half hours, and shortly thereafter, the drinking, eating, running, and reveling commenced. We had the largest showing of Harriers so far, mostly virgins, numbering around 35. At 3 PM, the group started out, split into 2, or 3, or 4? groups. The runners quickly took a lead, followed by the walkers. We’re not sure what happened to the other group, actually (“girl in the hat,” we hope you made it home safe).

The weather was perfect, the scenery was breathtaking, the trails were challenging. Qing Ming Festival was in full swing, and Harriers dodged I.P.’s as they ran/walked/stumbled through the hills of the Hangzhou West Lake Scenic Area. After the run, “down downs” were awarded for exceptional contribution to the spirit of event, and the numerous virgins were properly welcomed to the organization. Afterward, the revelry continued at Vineyard late into the night, completing a great day with great people.

H.E.I.D.E.:  Instructions during pre-briefing were very clear (A-to-A run / stay together / etc) . Even mentioned that the reason why we take a group picture is to know who didn’t make it to the finish…. don’t expect any accidents or other sort of things. Unfortunately some people didn’t make it back. 2 Spanish people (rugby people who hashed before). Some Chinese girls wearing hats… Run was set with start and finish from Vineyard. Trail went to the ridge nearby. We climped that ridge twice…. On the way we saw various graves (Tomp Sweeping Day) and paid our respect (or at least tried)…. One check was accidently set on top of grave site. Down Down to hares awarded afterwards. The circle was conducted in harmony whereby all virgins (estimated 25) introduced themselves. A few down downs with the tools used out of our toolbox. Bash followed at Vineyard inide by about 12 people. The new official Hangzhou Hash Patch was introduced and sold for RMB 10 each to most virgins as a memory. 

Mike & Kimberly were AWESOME and helped with all mis-management jobs. The Hangzhou Patch was introduced and sold for RMB 10 each to most virgins as a memory.

HZH3 Hash #135 rehashed

First, thanks to all last weekend’s HZH3 Hash #135 participants! Although I wasn’t able to be there, looking at the pictures, it was great to see such good participation on our second new generation Hash. I guess it was a pretty easy decision to head outdoors on such a beautiful Hangzhou day though!  🙂

It looks like there were lots of Hash virgins (We like Hash virgins, of course, and, by the way, congratulations on popping your Hash cherries! See you next time!), and it was very good to see many people from the first new Hash a few weeks ago coming back for this second installment. It was also fantastic to see one of the past HZH3 veterans there too. Welcome back, Sheep Shagger!  😉

Here are some words from our HZH3 GM, H.E.I.D.E., rehashing about the HZH3 Hash #135:

The hares assigned for Run 135 were H.E.I.D.E. and Roomboy. Both of them had to wake exceptionally early on a Saturday morning to set the run though the hills and parks nearby AMIGO. That task was completed in approximately 3 hours. Thereafter, the pack of about 20 people gathered for an enjoyable afternoon of running, walking and socializing at the Terrace of AMIGO.  

The run started at 3pm sharp. Soon afterwards 3 groups were formed. A running group was formed all eager to finish first. A walking group was created that didn’t care about any of that and decided to enjoy the beautiful environment.  The third group lead by a famed Scotsman decided to stay at AMIGO’s and continue drinking instead.   

After the run a few “down down’s” were awarded to the various persons who contributed in an exceptional manner. The On On Bash at a local restaurant nearby completed a most enjoyable day spent among like-minded individuals.

Finally, a big HZH3 thank you to Logan and the staff from Amigo Bar and Restaurant for all his help and support for the HZH3 #135 Hangzhou Hash. We look forward to returning to Amigo Bar again soon!

Dear Friends,

I’m very pleased to tell you that the first HZH3 Hangzhou Hash in 3+ years went very well. Excellently, even. Furthermore, the trail was wondeful and clearly marked and it was applauded by all… I should know, since I was one of the hares along with HEIDE.

HZH3 Run #134 had 19 starters including one returnee from the HZH3 of 4 years ago, Phonebox, who came to Hangzhou from Shanghai especially for this restart Hash. About half of the group were Hash Virgins.

For this HZH3 restart run starting at Maya Bar (a famous old haunt of the old HZH3 of old), we took the 19 Hashers up and down hill sides via twisty paved and unpaved trails; alongside small, ‘blink and you miss them’ tea fields; through subterranean caverns (also known as under road pedestrian tunnels); in misty bamboo forests (or was that just camera shake?); along bustling front alleys and not bustling back alleys; and finally through a top 5 (or 3, depending on who you ask) (very picturesque) university campus before returning to Maya Bar.

Out of the 19 starters, the hares were very pleased that only one person failed to reached the finish (FYI, he reported in from his 5 star hotel room about 1 hour after everyone else had finished). Also, through no fault of the hares, Triple X and Gasbag, who arrived just as the pack was leaving, managed to miss the perfectly visible first mark just around the corner from Maya Bar. They caught up with the pack at the bottom of the first hill.

The first Circle of the HZH3 in the new era was well administered by the experienced (but not quite decrepit) pair of RA Roomboy and GM HEIDE, who both awarded a number of well earned Down Downs. “Just Elaine” did an outstanding job as ‘Beer Bitch’ in her Virgin Hash. First time HZH3 Hasher (but 8 time Beijing Hasher) “Just Andy” distinguished himself by awarding some astute Down Downs and, in turn, being awarded a devious Down Down himself.

More than half the group stayed on for the HZH3 Hash #134 Bash, which was held at another old haunt of the bygone HZH3, FengDu Restaurant, which is still next door to Maya Bar.

There were 7 Hangzhou HZH3 members in attendence, including one baby who did the Hash walk strapped to his daddy’s chest. Plus about 30 runners and walkers from Shanghai. Hangzhou Hash members participating were: H.E.I.D.E., plus Mrs Heide and Baby Heide, Triple-X, “Elaine”, “Eva” and yours truly Sweet FA.

There was, of course, a perfect Hash trail laid by the hares from Shanghai (Stick Massage and Math Factor). In fact, as a measure of how good a trail was set, and of the synchronicity of Shanghai Taiping Hash runners, one Shanghai Taiping Hash runner even made it to HOME before the hares…

The trail began in the 6 Harmonies Pagoda carpark, then went up and down steep and not steep hills and through winding paths and forested trails, then entered and exited secretive mountain valley tea fields, and finally ended up at a superb NongJia Cai Guan Farmer’s Restaurant) just a few hundred metres west of the 9 Creeks track bus station.

Oh, and the Shanghai Taiping Hashers had a great and problem free bus trip to Hangzhou too. And, by “great and problem free”, I do of course mean they encountered endless roadblocks and traffic jams and it took them 5 hours!!! So, instead of the hares setting off at 1pm, it was actually after 3pm.

Luckily, everyone (Hash walkers (including 2 Hash babies) and Hash runners/joggers and several Hash virgins) made it HOME by late dusk and a fine circle and Bash ensued.

It’s the same venue, Zheda, what more could be expected except the same old waving guy and unavoided zigzagged trails in botanical gardens. The early comers arrived, waiting for the hare coming back patientely , while other late comers  impatiently. When all arrived, the pack of 6, Sevenup, Deepthroat, Phone Box, Rao Ya, Yuan Wu and Sheepshagger, set out, running up the Yugu road for a few minutes, the trails turned into a muddy path in the bamboo wood of the botanical garden, but the pack soon got stuck in the wood, with the wild and undisplined haring style of Long Memember, our new member, those old dogs,   extra short or long FTs, random circle checks.. When they struggled out of the maze finally, GM seven-up got sick and went back, what an early withdraw! The rest of the pack continued, but soon trapped in the allays in a village between the boarders of the botanical garden and the zheda compus.  New runner Raoya got sick too and couldn’t run more.  Sheepshagger waited and took accompany of her, after having some water and rest, they went on. The pack now divided into 2 groups. When the second group got out of the alley, they can’t find any marks around. No idea whereabout of the first group. So they just went back to the start across Zheda campus. Then about a few minutes later after they arrived, the first group came back. All gathered and came the circle, lots of blames and down-downs for the Long memeber’s confusing way of trail-setting ,to which he refuted but no avail. Then all went to dinenr, followed by a regular drink session in a cute and comfy bar nearby .

Sheep Shagger.

Rain, wind, dark clouds rolled in the sky, typhone Morrak was in its foreplay when hare Sheepshagger finished his trail setting work. Two undaunted runners showed up, Liangxue and Raoya, of both are first timer , but how can this two and only new hounds run without instructions by an old hand, and worst of all the rains and winds was drawing tighter. So without doubt, Sheepshagger took the job of old dog, The three runners set out on the road. Rather than running, they walked their way amid the tight rains and winds, with umbrellas. Most marked arrows were gone, washed away of by the rain. Were it not the hare was taking the way! The pack walked along the paved path of park Liu Lang Wen Yin, translated Orioles singing in the willow tree, acrossed Nanshan Rd, up Wansongling Rd, up to the war memorial tower, until they reached to the top of hill, took a RG in the pavillion overlooking the Westlake and the Qiangtang river. Then walked downhill by a anonymous track, passed a hidden Christian nunnery, door closed, wall cracked and backyards untended, perhaps the only one in Hangzhou, which seems a bit out of place and odd in this city of secular heaven and yet home to the countless hustle-bustle buddalism temples . Finaly back to earth ! The pack ended up in the Hefang Str., back to the start and they made it, there they met Phone box, who was coming to join the dinner. The wind and rain drawed even harder. Will do it next time with sunshines and more runners.

Runners: Robert, Dennis, Sevenup, Deep Throat, Arick and two visitors.
Yuhu wan, very beautiful place, and the spring rain made it much prettier but in the meantime the rain brushed most of Phonebox’s work away. Robert, Dennis and Arick arrived around 3pm, and didn’t found the venue until 4:30pm, we all thought that might have scared them away from that time on. Also those two visitors are very interesting, especially the boy. They are from Zhoushan, visiting Hangzhou, met Robert and Dennis on the way, helped them to find the venue, and the boy ran our hash!! Also as always happened on rainy days, we got lost and came back from the original route, then a simple circle, then went back to Fengdu for dinner (Robert and Dennis went back to Xiasha). It is such a good place, deserves a second trail there on a sunny day.

It was not as well organized as the 50th run; under the influence of the financial crisis, we tried to keep everything as simple as we could. Take the Friday night bar crawl as an example; we started from the wine center@6 :30pm and then moved to 11:00pm @maya, which was the terminus, no one moved on further than that.
Saturday was the big day – hash running, BBQ at Botanical Garden, sunshine, comfortable temperature, well organised– all sounded perfect, except the reality was: Sevenup’s entry trail crossed Henti’s hash trail, so many people got lost; Sevenup booked the BBQ that Monday but was told no tables or BBQ were available when she arrived; Doggie carried all the food and drinks (water, 26 big cans of beer and 74 bottles of beer) but no one got the information that he needed help to transfer all the stuff from the gate of Peach garden to the BBQ site; the two hares were back half an hour late, though it was already 10 minutes past the set time. So the hash didn’t start until 2:00pm. The whole trail was easy to follow by such a big bunch of people, it meant the trail itself was uneventful, but when we passed a pond, bloody Henti put T&D in! So T&D carried poor Sevenup and JUMPED in – the whole world knows that sevenup is not a swimmer but no one tried to rescue her when she was yelling “help
